Connecting Experience, Building Communities

The theme of the 2027 SESOC Conference is "Connecting Experience, Building Communities" – recognising that the strength of our profession lies not only in what we design, but in our collective commitment to learning from each other.

Structural engineering is built on generations of shared knowledge. Every project, success, challenge, and lesson learned contributes to the collective experience that shapes our profession today. As we face increasingly complex technical, environmental, and societal challenges, the ability to connect with peers, learn from those around us, and work together towards common goals has never been more important.

The conference programme will explore how experience, collaboration, and innovation can help us create more resilient structures, stronger professional networks, and better outcomes for our communities. Through a dynamic mix of keynote presentations, plenary discussions, technical sessions, and interactive forums, delegates will be encouraged to share ideas, challenge assumptions, and gain fresh perspectives from across the industry.

Topics will span advances in technical practice, lessons from significant projects and events, emerging research, developments in regulation and policy, and the opportunities presented by digital technologies and sustainability initiatives. Alongside these future-focused conversations, the conference will celebrate mentorship, leadership, and the transfer of knowledge across generations and international geographies, recognising that our greatest asset as a profession is the experience we share.

As the ninth New Zealand national conference hosted by SESOC, the event will bring together emerging professionals, experienced practitioners, and industry leaders from engineering, construction, academia, government, and industry. Through technical sessions, professional development streams, networking opportunities, and social events, delegates will exchange ideas, build meaningful connections, and explore how the collective experience of our profession can help create stronger communities and an optimistic future.

We look forward to welcoming you to Auckland for an engaging and inspiring conference as we connect experience, build communities, and explore the future of structural engineering together.
